The Australian Culture and Landmarks

Twelve magnificent limestone formations call The Twelve Apostles lay on the Southwest coast of Victoria, Australia (Victoria1). These landmarks are called The Twelve Apostles. Interesting landmarks like The Twelve Apostles and of course Australia’s one of a kind culture not only make Australia fun, but it makes Australia interesting and informational. There are many cultural traditions and landmarks from the Sydney Opera House to the Great Barrier Reef that make Australia an amazing place to go visit for tourists around the world.

The Australian culture includes the languages, the clothing, sporting, and holidays they celebrate. According to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Australian Government) “Australia is a product of a unique blend of establishments and new influences.”( The national language of Australia is English, however other languages other than English are valued just as much. More than over fifteen percent of Australians speak languages other than English at home. After the English language, Italian, Greek, Cantonese, Arabic, Vietnamese, and Mandarin are the most common languages. Some Australians speak more than two hundred languages including indigenous Australian languages. According to People “The types of clothing people wear reflect the diversity in Australian society and the variations in climate.” Clubs, theaters and other places require neat, clean clothes and appropriate footwear, but Australia does not have an official national dress code. (People 1). Holidays are also very important the the Australian culture. Typical Australians celebrate holidays like New Years, Christmas, Easter, (celebrated same dates) Boxing day, which is celebrated the day after Christmas, Australia Day celebrated on the 26 of January which honors the founding the first European settlement in Australia in 1788. Australians also celebrate Anzac day. Anzac Day is celebrated on the 25th of April , and it is to honor the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps AKA Anzacs that landed at Gallipoli in Turkey in 1915 during World War 1. This day is set aside in memory of those who fought for Australia and those who lost their lives in war. The day is a national public holiday and is commemorated with ceremonies, the laying or wreaths and military parades(. People 1). Along with the national holidays that everyone celebrates, there are also holidays which only specific territories celebrate. Like Labour (or Eight-Hour) Day, the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth, and Melbourne Cup Day which occurs on the first tuesday of November each year. This is a public holiday in metropolitan Melbourne, the melbourne cup is a world-famous horse race which brings Australia almost to a standstill. For a few minutes, most people , wether at work, school, or home, stop to watch the race on television (People 1). The Melbourne Cup is very important for those who wish to celebrate the “holiday”, another important piece in Australia is the Sydney Opera House.

The Sydney Opera House, one of the most popular landmarks in Australia, is a multipurpose performing arts facility that plays a big part in Australian culture. It’s unique and interesting, making it a great place to visit. The Opera house is located in Port Jackson, New South Wales Australia near the Harbour Bridge. The Opera house is one of the most photographed buildings, because of the beautiful architectural design that is known worldwide(Sydney 1). The Opera house would be a great place to visit because of the plays and different screenings that play daily, the rare structure of the building, and because of the beauty and fun it brings. Not only the outside of the Opera house is fun and interesting but the inside is even more beautiful (look at figure 1 for details). The Opera House brings in tons of visitors each year for the different play and musicals and the house has many theaters to fill them with. There is rarely something not going on in any of the theaters, so tourists won’t have a hard time finding out what to go and see. The Sydney Opera house has three different theaters, all different sizes. The biggest Theater seats about 2679. The Opera house performs different plays, choir performances, ballet performances, symphony concerts, musicals and screenings. The building also has restaurants and even a professional recording arts studio (Sydney 1). The opera house has multiple things to go visit inside, so you’ll probably end up spending your day there. The building is located right on the Harbour giving tourists a great view. The fun filled Opera House has lots of things tourists can go do on vacation, there is no other architectural design, or action packed building as the Sydney Opera House.
