When I listen to the radio, there is always one station that I turn to first. KDHX 88.1 is

member-supported community radio that serves the St. Louis metro area. I have never found

another radio station that could compare to the broad mix of eclectic programming that KDHX

provides. You never know what you are going to hear when you tune in, it could be live local

music, a film or restaurant review, or an informative talk show.

The thing I like the most about 88.1 is that every time I listen to it, I know if I listen long

enough I will hear something that I have never heard before. The music played on the station

ranges from blues and jazz standards to totally bizarre experimental music and spoken word

segments. I would be lying if I said that I liked every song played, some of the music on KDHX

really baffles me, but that is precisely why I like the station so much. As a musician myself, I

love to hear music that is drawn from diverse cultures and timeframes. I feel that every time I

listen, I am learning something about music, and that is very important to me.

I find overly excited disk jockeys very annoying. I don’t really care how many “crazy drunk”

girls are going to be shaking their booty on The Landing tonight, or how intense the live satellite

feed from Party Cove is going to be. Thankfully KDHX has none of this, every broadcast I

have heard has been done with at least some sense of class. I always feel like I can relate to the

DJ’s on 88.1, because they seem to have a deep appreciation for the music that they choose to

play. They never yell in your ear and they usually have some extra information about every song

they air. A big part of this is probably due to the fact that most are volunteers and pick their own

play lists. It is evident that they truly enjoy whatever programming they are presenting to you.

KDHX is not owned by a major communications conglomerate, you won’t hear long strings

of obnoxious commercials for giant nationwide franchises. In fact you won’t hear very many

commercials at all, and the ones that do air are usually for local businesses or humanitarian

organizations. KDHX is focused on our community, and what they can do to improve it. I truly

appreciate this, I always try to support local businesses or organizations over large corporations

myself. On a humanistic
