The 10,000 Hour Rule
The 10,000-hour rule talks about the idea that you need 10,000 hours of practice before you can work as an apprentice and be good at what you do. I understand that a lot of people follow this rule and some do the 10,000 hours of practice. Personally, I do not agree with this idea because I have seen a lot of instances where this rule does not come into effect. In the following paper, I will defend my reasoning in my feelings about the 10,000-hour rule. I hope I am convincing enough and I can explain myself to be believable.
As I stated I do not fully agree with the 10,000-hour rule. I feel that people are born with higher IQ’s than others. It doesn’t make one person better than the other, just smarter in different ways. I know, as a teacher, I see all different levels of 5-year old’s. Some come into kindergarten and cannot write their name, some come and can write all their letter sand identify them and some can read on a higher level than a first grader. I don’t feel that that proves that they had all this practice. They come from the same pre-school and the same teachers and can operate on different levels.
For instance, I have a set of twins in a kindergarten class. One is a boy and one is a girl so I take that into consideration when I am teaching and observing their levels. They are not on the same level at all. The boy can do some things that the girl cannot do and vice versa. They have the same parents and come from the same upbringing. This doesn’t mean the parents work more with one child then the other. It just means they learn differently and are on different levels. There is nothing wrong with either one of them. They are in the bracket for kindergarten and do not need extra intervention. I will be interested to watch them as they grow older and see if their levels change. Maybe they will even end up being the opposite as they learn.
On the other end of the spectrum, age wise, my husband never went to college or had any formal training in his career. He is OSHA certified to run equipment that he taught himself how to run. He observed his family members and then could teach himself. He is also certified to teach other people and certify them on the equipment. He never went to school nor did he train for hours on end to get to where he is today. He also is a sales representative for the company he works for. They do not send you to an extensive training to learn how to be a sales rep. He basically did
