Determining the Empirical Formula of a compound

Objectives:

-To form a compound from the elements iron and oxygen

-To determine the empirical formula of a compound produced in this chemical reaction

Supplies

        -Ringstand

        -Ring support

        -Lab Burner

        -Crucible

        -Crucible tongs

        -Water –soluble marker

        -Pipestem triangle

        -heat resistant mat

        -Centigram Balance

        _Lab apron

        -Safety goggles

        -Medicine dropper

Chemical Reagents:

        -Steel wool, fine

        - 1M ammonium chloride soloution, NH CL

Procedure:

-Refer to page 42 in the “Essential Experiments for chemistry”

Data and Observations (Experimental Results):

Before  the reaction

Mass of crucible+iron

27.20g

Mass of crucible

24.20g

Mass of iron

300g

After the recation

Mass of crucible+compound

27.90g

Mass of crucible

24.09g

Mass of steel wool

3.80g

Observations (Days)

                                             1

Steel wool is dry, coarse, and grey

NH CI made steel wool damp

Nh CI pooled at bottom of Crucible

                                             2

Steel wool is slightly damp

turned slightly brown in colour

                                             3

Pretty damp, more NH CI is added

NH CI is no longer in the bottom of crucible

                                             4

Steam coming off wool

Crucible red from heat

More steam through level of heat
