My Personal Leadership Qualities
My Personal Leadership Qualities
I agreed with John Luther when he stated, "You don't have to be brilliant to be a good leader. But you do have to understand other people, how they feel, what makes them tick, and the best way to influence them ". (Sheila C Grossman and Theresa M.Valiga, 2009). This course is giving me enthusiasm as it will be a tremendous help to my current job. Additionally, I never really practiced or experienced the full potential of being a leader two years ago as an inpatient nurse. I have never imagined that there are different types of leadership, and everyone reacts to each type differently. As a team leader in one of the busiest outpatient department of Kaiser Permanente, I would consider myself as a novice in leadership.
I completed the leadership assessment tool from the nursing times website (Goshen, 2012). The result came out fascinating and showed a cohesive assessment of both my personality and leadership attributes which I gained over the years as a nurse. It showed that I am a democratic leader. According to Klinker, J. F., Hoover, J. D., Valle, F., & Hardin, F. (2014), Democratic leadership involves a team that is guided by a leader. All members are included in the decision – making process to come up with a solution appropriate for the team. The leader believes in equal participation and encourages everyone to do the job done rightfully. However, the downfall to this type of leadership is time management and complacency. If not managed correctly will lead to chaos within the organization. These, I have experienced and consciously trying to improve my style as a team leader on how to manage my time efficiently and appropriately. This assessment is true to my personality and leadership style. Good values, understanding feelings and showing compassion for other people are the traits I learned as a Christian, and always
