The Greeting Etiquette
Every country and religion has its own greeting etiquette. A nice greeting to others can not only show your kindness, but also impress them deeply. For religious groups, observing this etiquette unifies the hearts and strengthens bonds between the believers. Muslims believe that spreading salam among them is the first step towards paradise. This is because spreading salam leads to the increasing love between their hearts, and the increase of love between their hearts will increase the Iman, (faith).
As-Salam Alaikum (i.e. peace will be unto you) is the greeting of a Muslim. And assalamu Alilkum Wa Rahmatulah Wa Barakatuh is the complete form for the greeting, which means peace, mercy, and blessings be upon from Allah. Salam has been the greeting of believer right from the day when Adam was created. Go through the following narration in this regard:
Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA): The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Allah created Adam (AS) in ‘His Image’ sixty cubits (about thirty metres) in height. When He created him, He said (to Adam), ‘Go and greet that group of angels sitting there, and listen what they will say in reply to you, for that will be your greeting and the greeting of your offspring.’ Adam (went &) said, ‘As-Salam Alaikum (i.e. peace be upon you).’ They replied, ‘As-Salam Alaikum Wa Rahmatallah’ (i.e. peace and Allah’s mercy be upon you).’ So they increased ‘Wa Rahmatallah’.” The Prophet (PBUH) added, “So whoever will enter Paradise, will be of the shape & picture of Adam. Since then the creation of Adam’s offsprings (i.e. stature of human beings) is being diminished up to the present time.”
From the Etiquette of Salam: the one who comes greets the Muslims that are present; the one who is riding greets the one who is walking; the one who is walking greets the one who is sitting; the smaller group greets the bigger one; the young greet the elder.
It is critical to initiate the Salam. It was narrated that Abu Umamah (RA) said: Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said, “The one who is closest of people to Allah, the Most high, is the one who initiates the greeting of Salam. It is always welcome to hear the greeting of salam from Non-Muslims, at least in the short form “As-salamu Alikum”. But there is a point supposed to be remember that making sure you mean it( which you normally do) and will act based on it, for example, you do not say that and then get into a quarrel with someone. Some Muslims may welcome the complete greeting form, but others may not. Nevertheless, most Muslims are expected to be greeted with the short form of the salutation, “As-salam Alikum”.
