Essay title: A Walk to Remember

A Walk to Remember is a movie that tells an amazing story of two opposites attracting. The characters are all really interesting because they are so different. This movie really lets you see the clashing of different personalities. The setting of this movie is really important because its about a school in a small town of North Carolina. Since A Walk to Remember is a movie, the perspective isn’t a major part of the story. However, you can see life through teenager’s eyes. Perhaps one of the most crucial narrative elements is the theme. This movie can truly touch you and teach you a lot.

A Walk to Remember has a really interesting plot. It is about a teenager named Landon Carter. Landon is the most popular boy in school but also one of the biggest troublemakers. When he and his friends are caught playing a prank on a fellow student and nearly killing him, he must face the consequences. He is forced to tutor deprived children at a different school, assist the janitorial staff after school, and participate in the annual school play. While doing these activities he quickly realizes that now he is the outcast. While attending these activities he quickly crosses paths with Jamie Sullivan. Jamie has always been the object of ridicule upon his friends. She is a very typical “good girl” and she is extremely church oriented. Throughout the story you see their relationship change, and surprisingly he ends up falling in love. Of course, there is a obstacle there too. Eventually, Jamie informs Landon that she has Leukemia.

The conflict of the story is very interesting because in a sense it is person v. person at first. Landon is struggling with Jamie at first. He wants her assistance in all these activities he is taking part in but he also doesn’t want to be seen with her at school which causes a struggle. He is also struggling with Jamie’s father (who is the minister at church) because her dad does know that he is not the best kid and when his daughter starts hanging out with him he has trouble adjusting. Jamie is also struggling with her father because she wants him to see the good side of Landon and trust her in her decisions. Another type of struggles is person v. self. Landon is struggling because he is at first unsure about how to adjust with Jamie. He doesn’t know if he still should act cool with all of his friends or be with Jamie and be not as popular. Jamie is also struggling with herself. Since she has cancer she is afraid of what Landon will think when he hears.

The exposition of the movie is when Landon and his friends play a prank on a fellow student and it is really the start of the whole story. The rising action is when Landon gets the lead male role in the winter play and Jamie is the lead female role. That is when they really first start interacting and he asks her for help. The rising action is also during the school play when you can see the true chemistry between Jamie and Landon. He adds in a little kiss at the end of the show which is a real turning point for their relationship. The climax is when Jamie finally tells Landon about her cancer. Landon is so shocked and upset. He tries to give her everything she had told him she wished for and she even marries her when he knows her life will be over soon. The falling action is Jamie Sullivan’s death. It had been coming for a while and when it finally did It was sad, but you could see that Landon knew he had done everything he could for her. The denouement is Landon making visits to her father and his friends apologizing to him.

A Walk to Remember takes place in a small town called Beaufort in North Carolina. It is centered on Jamie Sullivan and Landon Carters life in high school in this town. It takes place in the late 90’s. The setting fits the story perfectly; I couldn’t imagine the same plot in a large city.

The major characters in this movie are very interesting, each with very diverse personalities. Landon Carter begins the story as the most popular boy in the school. He is a rebel and he is a leader of a group of kids who smoke and drink. Landon doesn’t really care about his future and is reckless. As the story progresses you can see changes in his personality. He is no longer a jerk but rather a nice boy who doesn’t care so much about what other people think about him. Jamie Sullivan
