In the beginning, the main character Jared is writing in his diary about his trip to the compound for his family reunion on July 4th. As usual he rides around the compound before going to the beach. But this time his bike happens to brake and he falls into a swamp that toxic waste had been dumped into. After scrubbing himself, he becomes clean until he realizes he can read minds.

He goes to his grandmother's house at the compound and begins to converse with his family. He overhears Uncle George talking about the frequent problems going on in the neighborhood.
