1. What were the key factors behind Brin, Page and Google's success?
The key factors that enabled Google to achieve such colossal success:
1. Google had a useful, innovative solid product to build around – this is by far the most important factor governing the success of a business.
2. Google kept its search engine very simple and efficient. It was careful not to turn off users and bog down speed with unnecessary junk and clutter.
3. Google kept users happy. It focused all efforts from the start (such as unobtrusive ads and keeping everything free) on achieving user loyalty.
4. Google involved its users in the development of its products (through Google Labs); this had the double advantage of increasing user loyalty/ satisfaction and lots of feedback.
5. Google never wasted any resources (especially in its early stages), unlike many of the other startups during the dotcom boom. It has always made a point to use large amounts of cheap hardware.
6. Google focused heavily on its personnel and employees. It complemented ambitious risk-takers with highly qualified, highly educated PhDs.

This a competitive strategy to protect it’s ad revenue. If they would not have partenered Microsoft would have taken away that market.

Google's core business is helping people consume information on the Web. As we see Google grow out its content offerings such as finance and maps, I think they'd have to make a serious play into more social and user-generated content
