Essay title: Sexual Discrimination
Understanding and developing methods of containing sexual discrimination in the workplace is a difficult issue to tackle, and won’t be dealt with correctly until both sexes have a general understanding of each other first.
Mary looks down as all her papers she just organized abruptly and violently fall to the floor as she clumsily drops them. Dave, a fellow employee decides to help Mary pick her papers up being the gentleman that he is. While the two shuffle quickly to pick up the papers Dave comments on how nice Mary’s dress looks today, and Mary thanks him with a smile. As the last paper is pulled off the floor Dave makes a move to grab Mary’s ass as they both get up. Feeling uneasy Mary grabs his hand and yells at him for attempting to touch her. From that moment on Mary always feels uncomfortable around Dave. Both now have put themselves in uncomfortable situations making both their efficiencies lower.
Everyday I’m sure something like this happens are a workplace between a man and a woman. These things will continue happening unless we get to the root of the problem. You have to realize that men and women are different. When a man can realize that a woman thinks differently and has different emotion than him, then you can start to attack the root of workplace sexual harassment.
A mans typical attitude and sense of humor is rather different from a woman’s in a general sense. First off, a mans attitude is based more on competition than that of a woman’s. So if a man and a woman were both in competition between one another in a workplace the majority of the time the man will win just because his wanting to win is much higher than that of a woman’s. As for sense of humor, I think its true…men and women definitely
have totally different senses of humor. I guess its just a near proven fact that men and women find different things funny. Since both share different attitudes and humors sometimes it can be difficult for them to communicate which could lead to confusion and harassment.
Other things different about the way men and women work together is their general thinking towards problem solving and managerial duties. A man on one hand is very competitive so he usually comes up with solutions to problems more quickly than a woman may, but can prejudge a situation not looking at it from all the angles. On the other hand a woman may take longer in making a decisions, but is sure to look at all aspects of the problem first before coming out with a final decisions.
