There are several settings in Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire. The settings in the book resemble medieval towns and castles. The opening scene is set in an urban street. The following scene is set at the Hogwarts castle. A castle is a common medieval image. Another common medieval image is people gathered in a stadium watching a big event. The next setting in the story is the Quidditch World cup. Another setting in the story is a town called Hogsmeade which is the last remaining wizarding town where the students at Hogwarts take trips to throughout the year.

The major characters in the story consists of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Voldemort, Sirius Black, Vernon, Hagrid, and Dumbledore. Harry Potter is the hero and the protagonist. He is a 12 year old boy with messy looking hair and glasses. Ron Weasley is one of Harry’s best friends at Hogwarts. He is tall and has red hair. Hermione is Harry’s other best friend at Hogwarts. She is very clever and is always the top student in her classes. Voldemort is the most powerful dark wizard ever. Sirius Black is Harry’s loyal godfather. He looks after ahrry in the novel. Dumbledore is the headmaster of Hogwarts. He is a wise, elderly, and powerful man with a long grey beared. He is the only wizard that voldemort has ever feared.

Harry Potter spent the end of his summer with the Weasleys before going to the Quidditch World Cup. A group of Death Eaters attack a number of Muggle bystanders and Voldemort’s sign, the Dark Mark caused terror amongst wizards when it is seen again. Back at the Hogwarts school, the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher was retired. The school's Triwizard Tournament was to be restarted, and to be held at Hogwarts. The names of all intending participants were put into a goblet known as the Goblet of Fire which would shoot out one name from each of the three competing schools which were Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang. Mysteriously, the Goblet also spit out Harry's name and he was forced to participate. Harry suspected that he has been deliberately put in grave danger, but Ron refused to believe Harry did not enter himself. Hagrid revealed the secret first task to Harry and Madame Maxime who was the Headmistress of Beauxbatons Academy. The champions had to battle a dragon in order to retrieve a golden egg. Igor Karkaroff who was the Headmaster of the Durmstrang Institute saw the dragons leaving only official Hogwarts champion Cedric Diggory who does not know what awaits him. Harry feels this is unfair and informs Diggory, but he still ent on to win the first task. The tasks were terrifying for Ron and Hermione. Harry's friendship with Ron is saved once Ron realized just how dangerous the Tournament was oing to be. In the last part of the Tournament, Harry and Cedric arrived at the trophy first and decided that because of the help they provided to each other, to grab the trophy at the same time. The trophy turned out to be a Portkey which was a a magical object which transports them to a graveyard where they found Peter Pettigrew and Lord Voldemort. Pettigrew killed Cedric, then used Harry's blood as part of a ritual to restore Voldemort’s body. Voldemort summons the Death Eaters and attempted to kill Harry, but Harry escaped and carried Cedric’s body. Harry used the trophy to return to Hogwarts. Back at the castle, Professor Moody was revealed as an imposter and Barty Crouch Jr had imprisoned the real Moody in a trunk. Crouch had been the one who placed Harry’s name in the goblet.
