Hollywood Girls Too Wild?

Article Analysis #1

2/18/07

I read an interesting article in Newsweek, February 12, 2007 called “The Girls Gone Wild Effect.” It talked about how much young girls look up to the “bad girls” of our society. The love they have for Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and Lindsay Lohan is beyond belief. It talked about how the obsession is happening younger and younger. They are looking up to that life style. It is becoming harder to explain what went wrong, when they do something foolish.

The big question if how do we control it? It starts at home! It stated that even though these girls are acting out and presenting themselves as “bad girls,” the negative things that we worry about are declining. Drinking, drug use, and teen pregnancy have gone down. Parents are teaching values at a younger age. It is important to have a strong family life.

This article was discussing the theory of high and popular culture. High culture is in reference to cultures patterns that distinguish a society’s elite. We are the ones that determine who is elite or not. The society has all the power and it seems doubtful that they even know it, by buying the books, the perfume, concert tickets and CD’s, that only makes them stronger and more powerful. As a group, society will have to decide when the nonsense is done. Parents will have to have boundaries and not allow the behavior.

Popular culture designates cultural patterns that are widespread among a society’s population. They have coined the term “ prostitots” for the young girls that act like her favorite pop culture “bad girl.” It has been starting as young as kindergarten. Girls are starting to think that is the way it should be. They are creating their own subculture. The whole “prostitot” phenomenon, is becoming a particular group of girls. They have created their own subculture with out even knowing it. Popularity scars this country. It can either hurt your or make you better. A lot of good things come out of pop culture, but we have also seen the not so good.

The article also talked about growing
