Abortion

Barrack Obama, the senator of Illinois, is running for president of the United States. He is against fellow democrat, Hillary Clinton and republican John McCain. Obama is different from his nominees supporting pro abortion. “I think that most Americans recognize that this is a profoundly difficult issue for the women and families who make these decisions” said Obama. (ONTHEISSUES, 2008 p. 3) He believes that the woman usually has a genial reason to making the decision to go along with the procedure. Obama thinks that Americans should focus more on why women are having an abortion in the first place, like teen pregnancy. Obama is pro choice and supports Roe versus Wade, a Supreme Court case that made abortion legal. Abortion is not the issue.

Obama voted yes on giving 100 million dollars for the prevention of unwanted pregnancies. He says “that there would be significantly less abortions in the world if more people focused on reducing teen pregnancies”. Reducing teen pregnancy should be what people are worried about more than abortion, because then women would have less abortions. Teen pregnancy is one of the main reasons that women are having abortions. He believes that sex education should be taught in all schools, starting in elementary schools, so that children and teens know the risks of having a baby when they are not ready. Most people think that starting sex education in elementary school is way too young to be talking about sex. “But we also know that when the statistics tell us that nearly half of 15 to 19 year olds are engaging in sexual activity, that for us to leave them in ignorance is potentially consigning them to illness, pregnancy, poverty, and in some cases, death." Stated Obama (ABCNEWS, 2007 p. 6)

Obama believes in partial- birth abortions. He believes the woman has a right to choose if she wants to go through with the process. He says that the decision should only be made between the doctor, who would be performing the abortion and the woman herself. He believes that if abortion was illegal, women would go through extreme and dangerous measures to get rid of their offspring.
