There are many terms and concepts used in the world of business that should be learned and understood. This paper will explain and give examples of six terms and concepts dealing with organizational behavior, organizational culture, diversity, communication, organizational effectiveness and efficiency and organizational learning. Although there are many more terms and concepts used in the business world these six analysis and asses the fundamentals of employee impact in the workplace.
Organizational Behavior is the study and application of knowledge about how people, individuals, and groups act within an organization. That is, it interprets people-organization relationships in terms of the whole person, whole group, whole organization, and whole social system. Its purpose is to build better relationships by achieving human objectives, organizational objectives, and social objectives. Organizational behavior encompasses a wide range of topics, such as human behavior, change, leadership, teams, etc. (Big Dog’s). Organizational behavior within my organization starts with the management. If the management has a poor attitude or no motivation to accomplish nor the goals the workers will sense that and share the same attitude. Attitude does reflect leadership. Leadership sets the tone within the organization. My current leadership has a positive attitude and the workers enjoy working for them as well as coming to work.
This in turn drives the organizational culture which is composed of the formal organization, informal organization, and the social environment. The culture determines the type of leadership, communication, and group dynamics within the organization.
Organizational culture is the conventional behavior of a society that encompasses beliefs, customs, knowledge, and practices. It influences human behavior, even though it seldom enters into their conscious thought. People depend on culture as it gives them stability, security, understanding, and the ability to respond to a given situation. (Big Dog’s) Keeping an open-mind to everyone’s thoughts and opinions helps to maintain credibility and moral within my organization. Although there are situations when individuals disrespect others because of their cultures, these types of situations are learning experiences for everyone. When someone is disrespected because of their culture they turn to another organization which investigates the situation and resolves it. Basically they are the mediators for the Air Force. Being in the military one tends to come across almost every culture known to man. This is turn makes the military the most diverse organization in America.
Diversity refers to human qualities that are different from our own and those of groups to which we belong; but that are manifested in other individuals and groups. Dimensions of diversity include: age, ethnicity, gender, physical abilities / qualities, race, sexual orientation, educational background, geographic location, income, marital status, military experience, parental status, religious beliefs, work experience, and job classification. Diversity as a concept focuses on a broader set of qualities than race and gender. In the context of the workplace, valuing diversity means creating a workplace that respects and includes differences, recognizing the unique contributions that individuals with many types of differences can make, and creating a work environment that maximizes the potential of all employees. (Human Resources). Diversity keeps my organization interesting and fun. When I first arrived to my organization some people had a problem with me. Not because I was new but because I am a woman and some people don’t like taking orders from a woman. I believe that is a sad way to think being that we all come from woman. Learning to accept the fact people comes in all shapes, sizes, colors and genders should have been taught in kindergarten. As adults in the workplace issues are faced everyday about diversity and as adults resolution should be made amongst each other. Hopefully as an end results each individual will grow form the experience.
Good communication is essential in the workplace. Each and every day, understanding what others are communicating, and what we are attempting to communicate, requires mental focus. Effective communication takes work. When communication is not expressed clearly in my workplace someone could lose their life. Pilots have to communicate with the maintainers to explain what is wrong with the aircraft and the maintainers have to explain to the people in my section what exactly they need to fix the problems.
