Social sites such as MySpace and Facebook are becoming increasingly more popular as today’s younger generations are trying to stay in touch with friends and acquaintances from all over the world. Travel is becoming more prevalent as we seek to explore new and exciting cultures beyond the borders of our home towns, and what these social sites do is help us stay in contact with hundreds of friends in hundreds on cities all over the world. Sean Young told me that, “Facebook and MySpace are the only way I am able to keep in touch with my friends and family while I am in Australia for the University of Florida’s study abroad program.” There could be a best friend vacationing in Sydney, Australia or a high school team mate that is playing college basketball two thousand miles away or it could be a friend from your Human Resource Management class, whatever the case, these sites enable the users to communicate and keep in touch with friends in a very fun and easy way.
MySpace and Facebook are great ways to reconnect with lost friends from middle school or friends that you met on a summer vacation. These sites are geared to allow the individual’s personality to come out on the page that they are creating. On each individual’s page, there is a multitude of information that can be learned about the person, such as what music they listen to, whether they enjoy athletics, or even what political party they are affiliated with. You can find email addresses of acquaintances, phone numbers for lost friends, or even mailing addresses for business partners, the options for the different pages are endless. “Facebook is a social utility that connects you with the people around you, and it is made up of many networks, each based around a company, region, high school or college” (Facebook). This makes MySpace and Facebook ideal for learning about people’s interests, and finding out what is important to the individual. The search feature enables the user to find friends from specific colleges or universities and you can search hobbies or interests, just to see how many other people enjoy bowling at UCF.
